So it all comes down to this. We have now reached the Top 5 from our Top 25 Movie Instrumental Theme Songs of all time. This cinematic adventure included songs about freedom fighting Scotsmen to socially talented secret agents. The songs in our Top 5 don’t just have a memorable portion of the song nor do they accompany any mediocre films. Instead, all of these top tier songs facilitate some of the greatest movies of all time. Any of these could arguably be number 1. We approached the task of crowning the king of instrumental theme songs with unbiased analysis and a time-tested gut instinct. The List:
5.) James Bond Theme- The best spy has to have the best song. That makes logical sense and is correct in this case. Yeah, Tom Cruise’s (Ethan Hunt) character in Mission Impossible series is pretty sick, but could he beat James Bond? Nope, he can’t. I know this might be the only time that I will openly state that someone other than an American is better, but Bond is the best. He has hotter women, uses better gadgets, has more movies, more memorable characters, more alcohol, and a better theme song.
4.) Top Gun Anthem- One of the best universally used theme songs. It really works for every occasion. You’re getting married? Instead of “Here Comes the Bride”, try having the old lady come down the aisle to this jam, while Goose (your best man) is still trying to get you to pull the ejection seat. “We’re in a spin Mav - you gotta eject!” The song just works. Try walking into work on a Monday and do the slow motion walk to this tune as you’re coming out the parking garage and tell me if you’re not ready to dominate some TPS reports.
3.) Star Wars- You know you might have the most epic movies of all time when you have two theme songs in the top 10. Star Wars has it. Right from the get-go you recognize this song whether you are 12 or 72 years old. This is one of those songs that you can instantly name only after hearing the first note. It even makes yellow words scrolling across a black screen seem absolutely epic. So epic, that at times you completely lose yourself in the song and miss half of the information on the screen. Big Al has yet to make it past the first line.
2.) Indiana Jones- Ah, the Indy theme song. Breathe that freedom in. I know it’s another Lucas project but what can I say, the guy brings the house when it comes to solid theme songs. As a self-proclaimed historian myself, I like to rock this one when reading about anything from antiquity. This is my going-out-to-pick-up-chicks song. Just stroll on up to her and say, “so are you into the Merovingian kings, or are you a more Hellenistic Greece kind of girl.” Ahh, works every time.
1.) Rocky Theme- Cannot think of a stronger more memorable theme song. Every time I have to run up stairs (I am lying I do this with the escalator), I rock this song as I hustle to the top. This is a definite staple on every iPod workout mix. Rocky gives hope to all the sub 5’8″ guys that want to appear like we can take 75 punches from Mr. T and still come out on top. With the way the Eagles are trending right now, outside of the Phillies, Rocky might be the only other person in Philly to win a title. Great film, great tune, great moments, and oh STALLONE. Done.
