Manly Skills: Learn to Play the Guitar

You have decided to stop just air jamming to your favorite tune and have now chosen to take on the daunting task of learning to play the guitar. But before you become the next Jimi Hendrix you’re going to need to start some where. Myself, Big Al, Austin, and Clayton all have a combined 30 years of experience and all of us have been where you are now. To start, you need to purchase your first guitar which in itself can be stressful especially if you don’t have anyone who plays guitar to help facilitate the purchase. Understand that this undertaking is going to cause you to spend more money as you go. For most of us, when we start an extracurricular activity we don’t want to drop close to $1,200 bucks. That being said, as you progress you will easily talk yourself into those purchases later.

For starters, you need to decide the type of music in general you want to play and how you want to play. If you’re looking for a “take anywhere” low maintenance style guitar than I would suggest going with a box set acoustic. Fender offers these for a pretty affordable rate and they include a bag and some picks. For an electric there are a number of companies like Squire and Epiphone that offer box sets with the amp. Just pick them up and see how they feel in your hand because the size and roundness of the neck will decide which just feels more natural in your hand. It would also be a good idea to take lessons just to get the basics down. If there aren’t any affordable teachers or you work odd hours, as I do, then I would suggest checking out Justin Sandercoe. He has a fanstastic website developed for any skill level of player and he will teach you songs as you progress, and the bonus is that the site is free. So get out there and start playing. Keep in mind that the guitar can be one of the most fantastically frustrating endeavors you have ever done. Some things you will pick up quick and others you will spend painstakingly long hours doing the same thing over and over again. And trust me, all of us struggeled to get down the G to C open chord transfer the first time. I am going to put down a beginners playlist that I played when I first started.
