This week were going to take a look at a local brewery that’s been turning a lot of heads on the national beer scene. Cigar City Brewing, right in the heart of Tampa Bay is a microbrewery thats been cooking up big things since 2007. With founder Joey Redner’s financial swagger and master brewer Wayne Wambles‘ know how, this dynamic duo has brewed up several gold metals at the Great American Beer Festival.
The Beer we are going to take a look at today hasn’t received national attention yet. It is however, one of my favorite seasonal brews from my favorite brewery. The Tocobaga Red Ale is a seasonal offering that was inspired by the Tocobaga Indians that once lived in the Tampa Area. Cigar City doesn’t have a set release schedule that I’m aware of, but from my experience it seems to come available at the beginning of spring and fall.
When you pour this celestial brew, the first thing you’ll notice is how sexy the beer is. The ruby red glow radiating out of your pint glass will be enough to evoke a slight chub and quite possibly a tear. But slow down big fella, the best has yet to come. The crisp citrus hop aromas will toy with your emotions as they dance off of the rich creamy head. If there is a heaven, I’m almost certain that this is what it would smell like.
The first sip is mind altering. Big velvety caramel notes sweep you off your feet and a hint of citrus follows shortly after. Just as you wrap your head around those flavors, a delightfully sharp bitterness from the hops cuts right through the richness for a clean refreshing finish.
