This has been a question that has been burning up my conscience for the last 6 months. Big Al and I couldn’t disagree more. Is Lord of the Rings considered a manly movie? Before you make that knee jerk reaction yes or no, let me lay out the arguments at hand. On the yes side, the movies are epic (especially in length), they have death and carnage, monsters, and they defeat evil with a the help of a Scottish Dwarf. On the other hand though, Lord of the Rings has about as much action in the first and third installments as Legally Blonde 1 & 2.
There are only two characters that are in the all three films that are cool, Aragon and Gimli. Frodo is pretty much the worst friend in history. Gandalf can get creepy at times, and let’s be honest, the elf would be better served as a character in Fern Gully. Now, the battle scenes are AMAZING, but do they make up for the 3 hours of walking around? Gollum is about as annoying as Jar Jar Binks. I will give Gandalf the occasional cool magic trick, but he is more like a children’s birthday party magician rather than a David Copperfield. This is going to be the first time that we are going to leave the decision of a BarRoom Debate solely to you guys – the DOM Army. Is Lord of the Rings manly? Or, is it the medieval magical rendition of Pearl Harbor… complete with 3 hours of boredom and 30 minutes of action? You decide!
